A great musician, one of the finest exponents of blues in early jazz, his trumpet played and fought with the greats - Fats Waller, Coleman Hawkins, James P. Johnson - perhaps above all, Sidney Bechet. He was a power in some superb jazz recordings. They're here.
1075 TPZ CD 1 Pete Johnson - Roll 'em Pete
Deeply musical, Johnson was one of the very best boogie pianists. Formed by Kansas City, he had a hard life. He worked and played with Big Joe Turner, and with Meade Lux Lewis and Albert Ammons (TPZ 1070, 1069 and 1067 respectively) formed The Boogie Woogie Trio. He got rich and fashionable and was a big influence on the later rock and roll. These recordings really do roll 'em.
1076 TPZ CD 1 'Fats' Navarro
EVERYTHING'S COOL
Perhaps the most complete of the early bebop trumpeters,Navarro, influenced by Dizzy Gillespie, himself was a forward-looking innovator, a marvellous technician and in his all-too-brief seven year recording career produced some stunning and some now classic discs. If only his genius had lasted longer.
